Accidents happen – our summer photo contest

Congratulations to our summer photo contest winner

Summer has come and gone and our photo contest has concluded. We received some great submissions and would like to thank all of you who took the time to send them in.

This year's winner was Jackie Ferrier of Padfield-Nelson Insurance Brokers Limited in Mount Forest, Ontario. Jackie elected to take a $500 cheque in lieu of the Apple iPhone.

“Our client was on the bridge deck finishing machine—the yellow machine stretched across the wet concrete—when this bridge collapsed last fall,” she says. We had so many great submissions for our summer photo contest in 2008 that we decided to run it again this year.

The submissions proved that our insurance brokers are among the first to see the results of accidents and typically arrive on site armed with their trusty digital cameras or cell phones.

Contest rules recap:
  • We’ll award an Apple iPhone for the best photo or video submitted between now and the Labour Day weekend.
  • All photos are welcome—a serious accident or a funny one.
  • Safety first—don’t risk harming yourself or others to take a photo.
  • We’ll publish as many as we can on our site.
  • We handle commercial insurance, so photos of accidents of a commercial or industrial nature are preferred.
  • We reserve the right not to publish photos of dubious taste.
  • Standard formats—GIFs, JPEGs or MPEGs—will be accepted.
  • Upload photos to our website or send to jdfarquhar@elliottsr.com

We know that our insurance broker clients are among the first to see the results of accidents, and for business reasons they often attend the accident site armed with their trusty digital camera. We think these pictures might be of interest to other insurance brokers clients who visit our web-site and this gave us the idea of our summer photo contest.

Contest rules
  • We’ll award an ipod to the best photo or video submitted between now and the Labour Day Weekend.
  • All photos are welcome – a serious accident (or a funny one).
  • Safety first - don’t risk harming yourselves or others to take a photo.
  • We’ll publish as many as we can on our site.

Lisa said, "This happened on my recent trip to the island of Cyprus in September. We were in Nicosia (Europe’s only militarily divided city). We were across the Green line into the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the sky started to look really dark and a few rain droplets started to fall. In a matter of minutes, golf ball sized hail was falling and we were hiding under an awning to escape the rain/wind/hail. The wind was so strong we thought it best to keep to our little awning until things cooled down. Once the rain stopped we headed back across the green line to our car (about two blocks away) and the road back to our hotel was covered in palm trees and all sorts of debris. It took us 2 hours to go 2 blocks. There had been a Tornado in Nicosia that injured 17 and left 10 homeless, fortunately there were no fatalities. This poor Mercedes was one of the injured."

This was an accident that took place in November 2008. Driver slammed through the wall at the Royal Bank of Canada located in Turner Valley. I took these photos minutes after the accident. There were a few minor injuries inside the offices of the bank, and the driver was not seriously injured.

Chris Lorne of Aon Reed Stenhouse in Edmonton, Alberta was certainly fast to the scene of this accident — he was a passenger on the bus!
“This happened in Banff a couple of years ago,” he says. “We were on the bus on the way back down from Sunshine, it was snowing, and the driver was going too fast. Fortunately nobody was hurt, but the driver was pretty shook up!”
